Drooling
With the reduced swallow reflex in PSP and CBD drooling is common. Drooling results when there is a build up or pooling of saliva. A loud gurgling can also be heard when mucus builds up in the throat.
Posture is important when swallowing. Support yourself with a cushion or pillow if necessary. If sleeping or lying down semi-reclining is best so add extra pillows to prop yourself up to aid breathing, allow natural drainage of saliva, expansion of the chest, reduce coughing and the risk of choking.
Try to keep your head upright, it will help you to swallow more naturally and lessen the build up of mucus.
Swallow saliva often – Remind yourself frequently.
Smear a thin layer of Vaseline on the skin around the mouth to waterproof skin and reduce soreness.
